NATO and Google Cloud sign multi-million-dollar deal for AI-enabled sovereign cloud
Google Cloud has secured a multi-million-dollar contract with the NATO Communication and Information Agency( NCIA) to deliver sovereign, highly secure cloud capabilities that strengthen NATO’ s digital infrastructure and data governance. The agreement marks a major advance in enabling NATO to leverage modern cloud and AI technologies while maintaining the strictest levels of security and autonomy.
NCIA selected Google Distributed Cloud( GDC) to support the Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre( JATEC), which will use the platform to modernize operations and manage classified workloads. A core element of the solution, GDC air-gapped, brings Google’ s advanced cloud services and AI capabilities into fully disconnected environments, allowing organizations to run analytics and AI on sensitive data while preserving complete operational control and meeting stringent digital sovereignty requirements.
This deployment ensures NATO achieves uncompromised data residency, operational independence, and scalable security across its mission-critical environments. The contract reinforces Google Cloud’ s commitment to supporting partners that safeguard the most valuable data across the Alliance.
Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA, stated that the collaboration will accelerate NATO’ s digital modernization while upholding the highest standards of security and sovereignty. Antonio Calderon, Chief Technology Officer at NCIA, emphasized the importance of industry partnerships in advancing NATO’ s digital transformation and ensuring a resilient, scalable cloud environment capable of protecting highly sensitive information.
The partnership highlights the demand for sovereign cloud solutions across the defense sector, reflecting NATO’ s focus on resilience, interoperability, and adoption of AI. It also demonstrates how public-private collaboration accelerates readiness for emerging security challenges. p
