CASE STUDY

Camunda, a leader in process orchestration and automation, is supporting Volkswagen subsidiary Audi by optimising central process management through the automation and orchestration of business-critical processes. The introduction of Camunda will allow Audi to create processes that are more efficient, more transparent and more easily auditable.

With the increase in complexity and changes in industryspecific requirements within the automotive industry, Audi required a scalable solution for digital process control. In particular, there was a need to improve continuity across departmental boundaries, avoid integration gaps and ensure a focus on added value.
Dr. Peter Faust, Head of Central Process Management, Audi, said:“ Process performance is essential for staying competitive and futureproofing. With Camunda, we are fundamentally refining our process management. This is reflected in both security as well as effective, controlled and lean processes which allows us to reduce costs and improve employee satisfaction.”
First use case: Efficiency enhancement in procurement
The first two use cases that were implemented with Camunda address central challenges in the area of procurement-to-pay( P2P):
• Flexible tool availability: When necessary, the platform allows the quick and co-ordinated transfer of tools to alternative manufacturing partners to maintain supply chain stability.
• Proactive supply chain reaction: In critical situations such as natural disasters or geopolitical developments, the relevant stakeholders will be informed and potential impacts to suppliers will be systematically analysed.
Outlook: Scaling and new use cases role – disruptions to supply can bring production to a standstill and pose a risk to business. Camunda is supporting Audi in optimising procurement processes and minimising the respective risks.”
We asked Dr. Peter Faust and Frederic Meier for more.

What impact has the rollout of the Camunda solution had on Audi’ s operations so far?
“ Camunda supports us in automating our processes. This ensures efficiency, shorter throughput times and significantly better control. As a result, we can respond more flexibly to events and make decisions more quickly which is particularly important in light of increasing supply chain volatility. This is especially helpful in the area of monitoring and early warning systems, enabling us to respond to potential supply chain risks in a timely manner and proactively inform suppliers and initiate countermeasures. In addition, Camunda’ s software enables the orchestration of interfaces and partners and also connects existing legacy systems with modern AI components.”
How did you‘ sell’ the benefits of the Camunda solution to Audi’ s employees?
“ To further strengthen our competitiveness and future viability, we as a company rely on co-operation with innovative partners and work together to find intelligent solutions. This also applies to central process management at Audi. The collaboration with Camunda is an essential building block for us in automating processes and improving process quality. Its software solution helps us to remain adaptable and consistent in an increasingly dynamic environment. The process engine provides transparency regarding process status, enabling potential process problems to be identified and resolved. This allows us to continuously improve process performance.
Following the successful pilot, Camunda will now be gradually rolled out to further departments. This year, Audi is planning to introduce this solution for other business-critical processes in various departments from procurement to production as well as HR. In addition, Camunda is set to be deployed at other brands within the Volkswagen Group.
Frederic Meier, Senior Vice President of Sales, Camunda, said:“ We are proud to be working with Audi to further advance digitisation in the automotive industry. In a production-heavy sector such as the automotive industry, procurement plays a central
“ Our employees feel the improvements in real terms as it reduces manual tasks. Instead, employees can concentrate on value-adding activities which in turn increases employee satisfaction. Change happens together with the employees.”
Where do you see the partnership with Camunda taking Audi in the future?
“ The introduction of Camunda at Audi is part of the ongoing development of our process management. Audi uses Camunda to further optimise process control and adapt it to the increasing demands of the
