EDITOR’S NOTE
H
appy new year and welcome to the
13th issue of Intelligent CIO Europe,
the first edition of 2019. Gracing
the cover this month is Johannes Hansen,
Senior Director Application Development
and User Experience for Lufthansa Technik.
He explains how the company utilised a Red
Hat open source solution to improve the
customer and operation experience.
Lufthansa Technik wanted to create a digital
platform for the aviation industry – AVIATAR.
The AVIATAR team can now use agile DevOps
approaches, automation, internal and third-
party integration and self-service capabilities
to quickly iterate based on data and
feedback. The airline is now able to provide
an innovative digital platform that helps the
world’s airlines optimise their operations.
As technology evolves, more and
more organisations are implementing
technological solutions into the workplace,
such as deploying a virtual workforce. A
prime example of an organisation doing
just this is the East Suffolk and North
Essex NHS Trust (ESNEFT) which wanted
to make laborious tasks more efficient in
terms of cost and patient experience to
ensure maximum productivity within the
workplace. The organisation implemented
a Thoughtonomy solution to make this

happen, which can be better understood
on page 62.
As we are now into a new year, we thought
it would be a good time to gather some
predictions from industry experts in regard
to the technological landscape of 2019. It
has been said that companies will leverage
the benefits of multi-cloud architectures to
drive their Digital Transformation journeys.
Discussion around the cloud took pride of
place and you can read more about this on
page 42.
Enabling Digital Transformation is a key
function of modern technology and is
the subject of discussion in this month’s
‘Country Focus’. We look at how the Nordic
region is transforming into a major growth
hub due to an increase in investment
opportunities within the region.
For this month’s ‘Editor’s Question’, we
asked whether businesses and organisations
should be doing more to strengthen password
security. Industry experts were keen to
share their views on the matter and Rupert
Spiegelberg, CEO, IDnow; Rich Campagna,
CMO at Bitglass; and Stephen Moore, Chief
Security Strategist at Exabeam, offer some
best practice advice to help businesses and
organisations improve their password security.
On the subject of security, we hear from
several more experts in the field for one of
our features this month who discuss the risks
that IoT can pose. They offer their advice
on how to secure network infrastructure to
prepare for potential attacks.
This month, we ‘Get To Know’ Tom Needs,
Chief Operations Officer, Node4, who tells us
how he got to where he is today and also how
he likes to relax and unwind outside the office.
