Vantage and Nebius put South Wales at heart of UK AI infrastructure push
Vantage Data Centers and Nebius are expanding the UK’ s artificial intelligence infrastructure with the first announced commercial capacity commitment in the South Wales AI Growth Zone – positioning Newport as a significant hub for high-density computing.
Under a new agreement, AI cloud company Nebius will deploy NVIDIApowered infrastructure at Vantage’ s CWL1 campus in Newport. The capacity will support AI training, inference, agentic AI and enterprise workloads for businesses, researchers, start-ups and public sector organisations seeking advanced domestic compute resources.
The project forms part of Nebius’ wider UK expansion. In June, the company announced approximately £ 1.7 billion of committed capacity buildout across four UK sites. Its infrastructure strategy uses NVIDIA’ s latest full-stack DSX AI factory reference design and supports the UK Government’ s AI Opportunities Action Plan.
For Vantage, the agreement builds on a presence in Newport stretching back to 2010. CWL1 is one of Europe’ s largest data centre campuses, providing the power, connectivity and scale required for increasingly demanding AI workloads. potentially strengthening the region’ s role in Britain’ s emerging AI economy.

“ Newport provides the scale, connectivity and operational capabilities required as demand for domestic compute continues to accelerate.”
Gary Tierney, General Manager EMEA, Nebius, described the UK as a market where AI is increasingly being built, deployed and adopted by start-ups, enterprises and the public sector. He said the Newport campus would provide a foundation for expanding access to NVIDIA-powered infrastructure.
The deployment also carries a broader regional development dimension. South Wales was designated a UK AI Growth Zone because of its concentration of digital infrastructure, fibre connectivity to London, high-capacity electricity grid and industrial base.
The region also hosts the UK’ s largest cluster of semiconductor businesses, giving policymakers an opportunity to connect compute infrastructure with an established advanced technology ecosystem.
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said domestic computing capacity would be essential to putting AI to work across the economy and public services. He said the Newport infrastructure would create high-skilled jobs while helping British businesses and innovators tackle complex challenges.
Welsh Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy Adam Price said the investment demonstrated Wales’ growing reputation as a strategic location for AI infrastructure.
As demand for sovereign and locally available compute increases, the Newport deployment illustrates how hyperscale data centres, AI cloud platforms and government growth policy are converging.
For South Wales, that convergence could turn existing strengths in power, connectivity and semiconductors into a larger role in the UK’ s AI future. It also gives customers access to powerful AI systems located domestically. •
The campus’ electricity consumption is matched with 100 % certified renewable energy. Newer facilities use closed-loop cooling systems designed to minimise operational water consumption, alongside air-cooled chillers and free cooling when ambient conditions allow.
CWL1 also sits within Vantage’ s multibillion-pound South Wales investment programme. The company expects to deliver more than 1GW of AI-ready capacity across Newport, Bridgend and Bro Tathan,
