PROJECT ROUND-UP

Spain’ s Galician Supercomputing Center( CESGA) has selected IQM Quantum Computers and Telefónica to deploy advanced quantum computing infrastructure – marking a major milestone for the country’ s research and innovation ecosystem. The two companies have signed a purchase agreement with CESGA to install two full-stack quantum computers in Spain, expanding national capabilities in next-generation computing technologies.
Under the agreement, IQM will deliver and install a 54-qubit IQM Radiance quantum computer – purpose-built for integration into high-performance computing centres – alongside a 5-qubit IQM Spark system dedicated to education and training. Both systems are scheduled for delivery by June 2026.
The deployment will significantly enhance CESGA’ s advanced computing capabilities and reinforce its role as a key national and European research infrastructure. The quantum systems will be available to the scientific community and accessible to leading companies across multiple industrial and research sectors, enabling experimentation with hybrid workflows that combine quantum computing, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing This project represents the first installation of IQM quantum computers in Spain, positioning CESGA alongside leading European centres such as LRZ and Jülich in Germany, CSC in Finland and CINECA in Italy, all of which are integrating quantum systems into their national HPC environments. The quantum computers will be complemented by the new Finisterrae IV supercomputer, providing additional computing power for artificial intelligence and other demanding workloads, as well as a new data storage system designed to permanently house large volumes of data and support more advanced data services.
“ Delivering production-grade quantum infrastructure into real HPC environments is central to our mission,” said Sylwia Barthel de Weydenthal, Chief Commercial Officer, IQM Quantum Computers.
Sergio Sánchez, CTIO Telefónica España, added that the collaboration will help bring advanced computing capabilities closer to researchers and enterprises, strengthening Spain’ s position in next-generation technologies.
SPAIN
Pure Data Centres Group( Pure DC), the designer, developer and operator of hyperscale cloud and AI data centres, has signed one of Europe’ s largest standalone hyperscale data centre leases of the past year. A hyperscale customer has committed to the entire 78MW campus at Westpoort, Amsterdam, with Pure DC investing more than € 1 billion to deliver the development.
As part of the agreement, Pure DC has secured the site, obtained full planning consent and contracted 100MVA of power through a private substation. The land has been acquired on a long leasehold from the Port of Amsterdam. Securing the site required extensive negotiations and close collaboration over many months, reflecting the significant planning, power and supply constraints within the Amsterdam market.
This major infrastructure project will play a critical role in supporting regional digital growth and energy resilience. In addition to the € 1 billion investment, the development is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs during construction and support many additional roles across the wider supply chain, prioritising local companies wherever possible.
Once operational, the campus will provide approximately 80 permanent skilled roles across engineering, maintenance, security and administration. Designated AMS01, the campus will comprise three 85-metre towers, each delivering 26MW of data halls designed for high-density compute. The facility will use highefficiency cooling, targeting a PUE of 1.2 in line with Dutch energy efficiency standards. The private substation is already live, with construction of the data halls scheduled to begin in January 2026.
Pure DC CEO Dame Dawn Childs said the project demonstrates Pure DC’ s ability to unlock new capacity in Europe’ s most constrained digital infrastructure markets. Pure DC also confirmed its commitment to community engagement in Amsterdam through education, skills development, charitable partnerships and environmental initiatives across the region.
