Italy’ s Quantum Renaissance: Inside Q-Alliance, Europe’ s Bold New Quantum Hub
Italy has launched an ambitious new quantum initiative uniting IonQ, D-Wave Quantum and leading Italian institutions to create a world-class hub in Lombardy, driving industrial innovation, scientific discovery and national digital sovereignty.
When the world’ s leading quantum computing companies join forces with Italy’ s top research institutions and government leaders, the result is nothing short of historic.
At the ComoLake2025 Digital Innovation Forum, Italy unveiled the Q-Alliance – an ambitious new initiative designed to make Lombardy a global epicentre for quantum computing.
Uniting IonQ and D-Wave Quantum, two of the sector’ s most pioneering companies, alongside public and academic institutions, Q-Alliance aims to accelerate scientific breakthroughs, industrial transformation and digital sovereignty under Italy’ s National Strategy for Quantum Technologies.
“ Q-Alliance is not only a technological milestone but a model of open innovation and cooperation – a symbol of Italian leadership in the European quantum transition,” said Alessio Butti, Undersecretary of State for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition
Building Europe’ s quantum hub
Lombardy, long a hub of manufacturing and design, now has its eyes set on the subatomic world.
Q-Alliance’ s mission: to create a world-class quantum ecosystem that integrates cutting-edge research, industrial applications and talent development.
Launched with the support of the Italian Government, the initiative aligns with the Interministerial Committee for Digital Transition’ s framework for quantum and digital innovation.
Its objectives are ambitious but clear:
• Strengthen national quantum infrastructure
• Advance industrial quantum applications
• Develop a quantum-ready workforce
• Ensure ethical and secure technology deployment
Q-Alliance will provide shared infrastructure – from quantum hardware and simulation platforms
