EU launches twin strategies to accelerate AI adoption in industry and science

The European Commission has unveiled two new strategies to accelerate the uptake of Artificial Intelligence( AI) across Europe’ s economy and research landscape – the Apply AI Strategy and the AI in Science Strategy. Together, they aim to cement Europe’ s position as a global leader in trustworthy and innovative AI.

“ The future of AI should be made in Europe,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“ AI adoption needs to be widespread, and with these strategies, we will help speed up the process while ensuring safety and trust.”
The Apply AI Strategy focuses on boosting AI integration in key sectors such as healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and mobility. It will mobilise around € 1 billion to support public and private sector projects, particularly helping small and medium-sized enterprises( SMEs) adopt AI solutions. The initiative will also establish AI-powered screening centres in healthcare and promote“ AI first” policies to encourage innovation while managing risks responsibly.
The AI in Science Strategy will strengthen Europe’ s scientific leadership through RAISE – the Resource for AI Science in Europe, a virtual institute connecting researchers and computing resources. With € 600 million in Horizon Europe funding and € 58 million for talent initiatives, the strategy will expand access to high-performance computing and attract global AI researchers.
To foster collaboration, the Commission is creating an Apply AI Alliance and launching an AI Observatory to monitor progress and assess impact.
Both strategies form part of the EU’ s broader effort to deliver its AI Continent Action Plan and ensure Europe leads in responsible, human-centred AI innovation. p
