PROJECT ROUND-UP
GERMANY FRANCE
BMW Group has announced a change in its IT leadership, with Alexander Buresch, the former CIO and SVP, moving to lead BMW Group Financial Services. His role will be filled by Franz Decker, who was previously the President and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive. The leadership change comes at a time when the automotive giant is focusing on digital transformation and leveraging technology to enhance business processes and customer experience. Buresch, who has been with the company for a long time, reflected on his journey shaping the digital transformation of the BMW Group. This move is indicative of a wider trend in which CIOs are increasingly moving into broader business leadership roles, highlighting the growing strategic importance of technology expertise beyond traditional IT departments.
CIOs and businesses in France and across the European Union are facing challenges navigating a fragmented regulatory landscape, particularly with the new EU AI Act. With some provisions of the Act coming into effect, technology leaders are struggling with inconsistent terminology and phrasing, which poses significant compliance hurdles. Reports suggest that even major tech companies like Google and Microsoft are signalling their intent to sign the EU’ s voluntary code of practice. The ongoing regulatory flux underscores the difficulties for businesses trying to implement AI-first strategies while ensuring they remain compliant with evolving legislation. The complexity is leading to concerns about how to maintain agility and innovation in the face of such a fragmented environment.
UK NETHERLANDS
Police forces across England and Wales are set to receive new AI tools to help tackle investigations into grooming gangs and revisit hundreds of cold cases. The initiative, backed by government funding, will expand the existing Tackling Organised Exploitation( TOEX) Programme, giving all 43 police forces access to a suite of AI-powered applications. Thirteen forces are already using these tools, which have reportedly saved thousands of investigator hours and millions of pounds. The move follows a report condemning the previous handling of ethnicity data, with a new directive for police to collect and report on offenders’ ethnicity and nationality. The technology is seen as a crucial step in restoring public trust and delivering justice for victims.
A new campaign has been launched in the Netherlands by a consortium of civil society organisations to protect and strengthen the country’ s civil society. The initiative, which includes groups like the Dutch Olympic Committee and a Christian and Jewish organisation( CIO), aims to secure support from the new government. One of the key priorities for these organisations, as outlined in a new policy plan, is to improve their digital capabilities. This reflects a growing recognition within the public and non-profit sectors in the Netherlands of the importance of technology and digital innovation for operational efficiency and achieving their goals.
