Becoming centre stage : The rise of ODM partnerships
Traditionally , ODMs ( Original Design Manufacturers ) have played more of a behind-the-scenes role in data centre infrastructure , unseen by end-customers , with OEMs ( Original Equipment Manufacturers ) remaining the face of solutions . However , in 2025 , we will begin to
In the past , the traditional OEM model has been restricted by standardised offerings and longer lead times , with an inability to keep pace with the evolving requirements of AI workloads . This has made directly working with ODMs an increasingly attractive option for organisations , with their ability to deliver bespoke , fast and cost-effective solutions , ensuring agility and customisation in their AI and data storage deployments .
This development stems from the creation of the Open Compute Project , which has transformed the industry ’ s traditional approach to solutions and collaboration . Since then , we have already seen multiple large cloud providers make the move to design their own custom hardware in collaboration with ODMs , bypassing traditional OEMs in order to gain greater control over optimising their specific AI workloads . This will only continue across the industry
