Carrbridge Youth Centre becomes latest beneficiary of Three UK ’ s Connected Communities programme

Following the successful launch with four youth groups across Leeds , Birmingham and Manchester , the Carrbridge Youth Centre of Birkenhead becomes the latest community group to benefit from the package donated and delivered by Three UK .
The youth centre was selected after being nominated by their local community in recognition of the hard work the leaders do to help young people and engage with them in their community . The nomination detailed how “ They do valuable work helping kids in an area that really needs it .”

Three UK has provided free high-speed broadband , smart tablets and digital training sessions to the Carrbridge Youth Centre , Birkenhead , as part of its Connected Communities programme .

Launched by Three UK ’ s Discovery team as a pilot initiative in 2022 , Connected Communities aims to bridge the digital divide – providing brilliant young people across the country with the tools they need to succeed – empowering them and their communities every day , through the power of Three UK ’ s network .
The first learning session at the Carrbridge Youth Centre was delivered by Three UK ’ s Discovery team on Tuesday July 2 and provided attendees with training in stop-motion animation . The 5G broadband and tablets provided will remain at the youth centre and be available to all of those who use it .
Three UK ’ s Discovery programme delivers digital training for local communities of all ages and abilities , no matter what network they are on .

iomart to power first UK data centre with solar energy generated onsite

iomart , a leading provider of cloud hosting and managed services , has installed 560 solar panels on its flagship data centre in Maidenhead , which will contribute to the aim of selfsustaining energy during the summer to power the site .

The solar panels will generate circa 250,000kWh of energy per annum at the data centre , avoiding 96,061kg of CO 2 emissions annually .
The 2,800 sqm data centre in Maidenhead is iomart ’ s largest site across its entire UK estate , which comprises 13 data centres . It ’ s also the cloud hosting provider ’ s main self-managed infrastructure facility , powering more than 12,000 servers .
This investment is part of iomart ’ s wider long-term sustainability strategy , which has seen the cloud hosting provider power all its data centres with 100 % renewable energy coming from sources including wind , hydro and solar .
The business also partnered with Katrick Technologies in 2021 to pilot a world-first heat cooling system , which aimed to turn iomart ’ s Glasgow data centre waste heat into power to drive its servers ’ essential cooling system .
David Gammie , CTO at iomart , said : “ Our Maidenhead data centre is the ideal location for a project like this . It has a vast roof space , making solar panels the ideal solution .”
The installation , delivered by solar energy company , 3ti , was completed earlier in May .
