CASE STUDY
Many businesses are in the middle of cloud-native transformation , what should they consider ?
Think of how to best balance your legacy and cloudnative solutions : simply discarding legacy workloads in favour of cloud-native is hardly a solution . As legacy systems are often critical for driving revenue and safeguarding important company data , my recommendation is to focus on modernising and automating processes around these systems .
Our survey indicates that productivity is considered the top challenge when combining on-premises infrastructure with cloud-based services , followed by maintaining security . With the implementation of a consolidated , unified infrastructure with capabilities to manage the entire lifecycle in a single oversight , customers can ensure extensive security from core to Edge to cloud . Thus , customers will be able to manage their legacy systems with more efficiency and provide their existing teams with more time for new initiatives .
SUSE solutions power many customers on their cloudnative journey – from MTU Aero Engines , targeting climate-neutral aviation , to BMW , keeping their factories at the forefront of automotive manufacturing or OLB ( Oldenburgische Landesbank AG ) transforming toward platform banking with SUSE .
Why is digital resilience so important for modern infrastructure ?
Monoculture is rarely a good concept – not in agriculture and not in global IT . Biodiversity in nature or choice in IT is what increases resilience and in parallel reduces dependencies on software from a handful of global vendors . The CrowdStrike Windows outage that interrupted 8.5 million Windows devices has shown the importance of a reliable and robust operating system for critical infrastructure . Our survey results indicate that maintaining a secure software supply chain is a key focal point for the respondents including efficient lifecycle management . While no operating system can guarantee a completely error-free experience , SUSE Enterprise Linux provides a more reliable and secure foundation for critical operations , ensuring stability and efficiency in high-stakes environments , as well as the ability to automatically revert to the last-known-good state .
How do you see SUSE ’ s role in helping European businesses and organisations to take advantage of open-source and AI ?
Open-source is at the heart of our SUSE business and development model . We experience every day that open-source is not a zero-sum play but that collaborating in the open with customers , partners and communities benefits all participants and creates a broader base for everyone to build upon and for our shared success . Our customers take advantage of this approach with the ability of choice in their transformation to cloud native . Thus , SUSE ensures that customers can freely choose the vendor which offers the best solution for their requirements , therefore , we see AI and open-source as natural partners : only with the open-source model AI can be done transparently and responsibly . Consequently , we have announced SUSE AI , a solution that offers a turnkey platform that provides enterprises the freedom to run private GenAI solutions with the LLM of their choice on-premises or in the cloud .
What role do you think Europe can play in the adoption of open-source and AI ?
One of the explicit goals of the European Union is to advocate open-source software . Open-source and open-source AI can and will foster a thriving ecosystem in Europe , closing the gap we see with the global technology providers , and ultimately resulting in more digital sovereignty for the EU . Especially with an opensource approach to AI , the EU can take the lead in democratising AI for use responsibly and transparently , as we will experience a massive transformation in the IT industry and our lives .
I am convinced that a consequent adoption of opensource technologies will help European businesses to compete globally and foster a European market . There is still a lot of wishful thinking in reaching these goals , and we at SUSE are looking forward to being part of that journey . p
