Digital Realty expands Mediterranean presence with development of new colocation and connectivity hub in Rome
Situated in the middle of three continents , the Mediterranean has become the gateway between Europe , Africa , the Middle East and Asia , and is attracting major intercontinental and regional subsea cable systems , creating one of the most important interconnection and digital traffic exchange areas in the world .
Digital Realty – one of the largest global providers of cloud- and carrier-neutral data centre , colocation and interconnection solutions – has announced its expansion into the Italian market following the acquisition and pre-development planning of land in Rome .
Digital Realty ’ s expansion into Rome will further strengthen its position as one of the leading providers of digital infrastructure capacity in the Mediterranean region , building on its existing presence in Athens , Marseille and Zagreb , as well as hubs currently under development in Barcelona , Crete and Tel Aviv .
Rome is the European Union ’ s third-largest city in terms of population and Italy ’ s second-largest by gross domestic product . Its strategic geographical location makes the city well-placed to grow its role as a global connectivity hub , complementing Milan , as well as increasing the resilience of Italy ’ s national and international network infrastructure . More importantly , it also helps the city play a key role as a major connectivity hub in the centre of the Mediterranean .
Signicat becomes first international aggregator to offer SPID , enabling seamless digital identity verification across Europe
Signicat , a pan-European leader in digital identity , has achieved another European milestone by integrating the Italian e-identity system , SPID ( Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale ), into its electronic identity portfolio . Being the first international aggregator to offer SPID , Signicat enables companies and public administrations across Europe to seamlessly interact with SPID users for customer onboarding and authentication purposes . With over 35 million Italians already utilising SPID , its adoption rate is increasing rapidly .
The integration of SPID , which is eIDAS compliant , into Signicat ’ s electronic identity portfolio marks a significant breakthrough , enabling European corporates across all verticals to offer SPID in their Italian onboarding journeys or as an authentication method already used by 35 million Italians . This means that any Italian can utilise SPID for services such as opening bank accounts , renting cars , or signing mortgages , when the service provider uses Signicat as their identity hub . This development effectively bridges the gap between citizens and businesses across Europe , fostering enhanced levels of interaction and engagement .
Signicat ’ s commitment to electronic identification extends beyond its support for SPID . Currently , the company facilitates over 30 electronic IDs in its Digital Identity Platform , simplifying electronic interactions between businesses , public administrations and their customers .
This comprehensive approach aligns with the European Commission ’ s European Digital Wallet project , which aims to bring the continent closer to a unified digital identity ecosystem . Signicat ’ s active participation in the EU Digital Identity Wallet Large Scale Pilots ( LSP ) further demonstrates its dedication to driving innovation and progress in this field .
