GSMA and European Space Agency launch new communications innovation partnership
Key to this collaboration will be the GSMA Foundry innovation accelerator which brings together the mobile network operator community and the wider technology industry , to accelerate cross-industry collaboration and advancements in mobile communication . As the ‘ Home of Mobile Innovation ’, GSMA Foundry helps members forge the digital future by rapidly developing real-world solutions to industry challenges , nurture innovative ideas through initial commercial trials and scale proven solutions at a regional and global level .
The GSMA and European Space Agency ( ESA ) have signed a Memorandum of Intent ( MOI ) to bring the mobile and satellite industries closer together to collaborate on developing new , innovative satellite and terrestrial networks technologies .
The ambition of the partnership is to further strengthen the competitiveness of both mobile and satellite network industries , by creating an ecosystem which can fast-track the development of new complimentary technology solutions for businesses and consumers . The two organisations will join efforts to speed up innovation when it comes to integrating satellite communications with 5G and future 6G networks .
GSMA Foundry will work closely with ESA ’ s 5G / 6G Hub , based at ESA ’ s European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications ( ECSAT ) based in Harwell , Oxfordshire . The ESA Hub brings together the satellite industry to work on new collaborative and innovative programmes . Benefitting from the support of the UK Space Agency ( UKSA ) the Hub fits into the UK Government ’ s 5G and 6G strategy .
Fibre-to-the-Home for households in Austria
Kontron has announced it has signed a contract with fibre network provider , Speed Connect Austria , to provide its range of Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) products and solutions to a number of households in Austria .
The contract , between Speed Connect Austria and Kontron Transportation for Iskratel optical broadband products delivery and deployment services of their Open-Access Fibre-to-the- Home network in Austria , has been signed in June 2023 at Kontron Transportation ’ s headquarters in Vienna .
Many households and companies in Austria will have faster Internet access thanks to the Iskratel broadband products developed and manufactured in Europe by Slovenia ’ s Kontron , a Kontron group company and sister company of Kontron Transportation . The implementation work started at the end of June 2023 and only one month later the first households , companies and municipalities in Lower Austria were connected to the nextgeneration optical broadband network .
“ We are happy to contribute to a faster Internet access for many households in Austria . With our long year experience as system and service integrator , we make the end-to-end project realisation and we put all puzzles together to integrate to bestof-breed network solutions ,” said Richard Neussl , VP CEE-DACH-INDIA Mission Critical Networks at Kontron Transportation .
“ Our advanced XGS-PON access solution including Optical Line Terminals ( OLTs ) and Optical Network Terminals ( ONT ) from Iskratel broadband product family , combined with networking equipment and services from our IT Infrastructure portfolio , will play a crucial role in providing Speed Connect ’ s customers with faster and more reliable Internet access across Austria ,” said Svjetlana Kalaba , Executive Director Business Unit Broadband at Slovenia ’ s Kontron .
