Smart Cities could be the answer to the climate crisis as organisations on a global scale aim to make their operations more carbon neutral . Governments must recognise the importance of investment in Smart Cities to drive more sustainable transformation and digitisation .
New research conducted by Disruptive Technologies has revealed Copenhagen to be the most sustainable Smart City in the world , based upon a range of parameters . Oslo and Zurich were ranked second and third respectively .
The research took into consideration a range of different criteria with Denmark ’ s capital coming out on top overall . It led the way in water sustainability and performed well in the categories of renewable energy , quality of living , transport , environmental , social and corporate governance ( ESG ), and smart technology adoption .
The Smart City credentials were demonstrated in a case study published by Cisco in 2019 where the city of Copenhagen is referred to as ‘ Europe ´ s capital of green digitisation ’ and highlights its smart capabilities .
The case study explores how Copenhagen required detailed insight into its city and why it needed a more intelligent use of the city ’ s existing resources .
In order to achieve this , Copenhagen collaborated with Cisco and others to develop a ‘ Street Lab ’ in the centre of the city to develop a city of the future .
