This is a well-known and documented concern in the industry, but has failed to gain attention and, in turn, downstream capital, outside of the SOC. Although related, the resource concern noted by the SANS Institute is a problem that has two separate drivers: 1. Not enough people. There is not enough human power in the enterprise security organization, often quantified by job vacancies and unfilled security roles 2. Not enough skilled people. Often less-than-ideal resumes are considered for unfilled security roles, or security leaders are open to staffing their teams with more junior candidates In North America, accredited universities have only recently begun to offer degrees in cybersecurity-related fields. Most programs are nascent and promising, but currently not producing enough candidates to fill the available positions in cybersecurity across the globe.
