EDITOR’S NOTE
W
elcome to the latest edition of
Intelligent CIO Europe where
this month, we welcome Charles
Ewen, Director of Technology and CIO at the
Met Office, onto the cover. He discusses the
state of technology in Europe and provides
an insight into how he thinks it will evolve, as
well as offering his thoughts on other tech
trends shaping the continent.
Also, in this edition, we consider how
Manchester City Council is building the
city of tomorrow by leveraging Nutanix’s
Enterprise Cloud Platform to create an
agile and scalable infrastructure. This has
enabled improved performance and vastly
enhanced availability. Mike Farrington,
Technical Operations Manager, Manchester
City Council, goes into more detail about
this on page 63.
As the growth of data produced by
the Internet of Things (IoT) and other
technologies force infrastructure to shift to
the Edge, it is important to consider how
Edge Computing can assist operations
and deliver real business benefits. As more
and more companies are operating in this
way, Andy Rowland, Head of Customer
Innovation: Energy, Resources and
Manufacturing, BT, highlights its benefits for
the modern technology era on page 42.

Cybersecurity is without a doubt a lucrative
goldmine for hackers and Istanbul Grand
Airport is on a mission to improve its
cybersecurity. We look at this in more detail
as part of our ‘Country Focus’ feature where
we explore the airport’s decision to partner
with Cisco to safeguard against hackers.
This month, we ask experts how important
they think cybersecurity education is for
young people for closing the cyberskills
gap as SANS Institute research shows the
majority of UK parents are in the dark when
it comes to advising their children on a
career in the industry.
We hear from Tara O’Sullivan, CMO at
Skillsoft; Aaron Higbee, Co-Founder and
Chief Technology Officer, Cofense; Steve
Hanna, Co-chair of the Trusted Computing
Group’s Embedded Systems Work Group,
who share their views on the subject.
This month, we ‘Get To Know’ Jason Wells,
VP and GM EMEA at Cradlepoint, who tells
us about his most memorable achievement
throughout his career, as well as about how
he likes to relax and unwind outside the
office, among other points of discussion.
