WHY HUMAN OVERSIGHT REMAINS VITAL AS AI RESHAPES BUSINESS
By Myles Anderson, founder and CEO, BrightLocal.
When a transformative technology reshapes an industry, panic often results. Across the SaaS ecosystem, the fast incorporation of AI has sparked widespread anxiety about job displacement and the demise of established industries.
We often hear claims that traditional ways of working are dying and that automation is about to overtake human execution entirely. But what does this mean for the creative minds that have run our industries for hundreds of years?
Thankfully, the reality is much more grounded than the ongoing hearsay. We aren’ t witnessing the death of human roles – we’ re living through their evolution that incorporates AI assistance into their traditional modes of operation. Take search and digital discovery, for example. As search incorporates agentic support, with AI models answering long, detailed prompts and taking on complex tasks, some fear traditional search strategies – as well as the teams behind them – are no longer needed. The fundamentals, however, haven’ t disappeared – they’ ve simply shifted.
Single-point tricks, shortcut hacks and keyword-stuffed content are losing value. What’ s needed now is genuine quality, consistent data, clear brand authority and a deep understanding of the customer. That takes more than another SEO tactic; it requires authentic human oversight and strategic brainpower.
Our 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey shows just how important this is. Consumers are moving back and forth between websites, social channels, review platforms and AI tools as they research businesses. Brands must make sure those touchpoints tell a consistent, aligned story and clearly communicate what their businesses stand for.
AI has transformed how services are discovered, evaluated and initiated, but these automated tools produce output contingent on the service’ s performance and its customers’ sentiments.
An AI agent is responsible for breaking down structured data, assessing availability and sometimes even scheduling a service. But it’ s unable to execute the actual service or create authentic business-customer relationships and trust. That’ s down to the service provider and the customer.
Far from superseding human output, AI serves as a multiplier when it is properly implemented into a business’ s workflow. Automation excels at standardizing structured inputs, processing loose data and accelerating execution. The caveat is that it relies entirely on human capacity to define strategy, maintain authentic brand reputation and build true relationships.
Therefore, people remain a vital part of the operation and they arguably occupy the driver’ s seat throughout the whole process. Human judgement continues to shape strategy, reputation and relationships every day.
Whatever your thoughts on AI, the world is becoming increasingly flooded with automated content and activity. But contrary to popular belief, the human elements – authenticity, clarity, proof of life and consistent trust – are becoming more valuable, not less.
When used effectively, AI expands what a team can achieve, but the nucleus of success remains unchanged: understanding true human needs and executing thoroughly on a sound, long-term vision for your organization.
Reassure your workforce that they will remain your greatest asset, since no algorithm can duplicate the human empathy, creative judgement and trusted relationships that power your long-term success. •
