For AIDA Cruises, OpenRoaming formed part of a broader network modernisation initiative designed to simplify connectivity while improving the user experience. The technology enables passengers and crew to connect securely without repeatedly entering usernames or passwords. Users can access Wi-Fi through preexisting identity profiles, creating a frictionless onboarding process while maintaining strong security and privacy protections.
The platform supports a wide range of onboard services. Guests can access daily programmes, information about upcoming ports, onboard chat services, booking platforms and entertainment applications. The network also supports streaming services, social media sharing and essential operational functions used by crew members throughout each vessel. connectivity for passengers and crew as they move throughout ships operating in some of the world’ s most remote maritime environments.

OpenRoaming is an open federation framework that enables secure and automatic connectivity between users and Wi-Fi networks worldwide. Through identity-based authentication, devices can connect automatically without requiring captive portals or repeated login procedures. The approach improves security while reducing complexity for users and network operators.
The deployment was first validated aboard a single vessel during a carefully planned 14-day dry-dock programme. During this period, Cisco Services and AIDA Cruises completed a full network overhaul within a narrow maintenance window before the ship returned to service.
According to the companies, the results demonstrated the reliability of the solution. Testing across 107 live access points, extending from the engine room to the upper decks, recorded zero connection drops. The successful deployment established a repeatable implementation model that has since been rolled out across the remainder of AIDA’ s fleet of 11 ships.
